Traces in Between

MY Q

Installation View (1)

2GIL29 GALLERY presents Traces in Between, a solo exhibition by MY Q (b. 1981), an artist who moves fluidly between music and visual art. Beginning his career as a singer-songwriter and producer, MY Q transforms rhythm and emotion into a visual language, constructing a sensibility that flows like silent music—where feeling and time intersect on canvas. This exhibition centers on the “traces” that arise in the interstices between presence and absence, fullness and emptiness.

Rather than depicting recognizable forms, MY Q records the vibrations of emotion as they unfold across the surface. Black lines flow, break, and reconnect, while colors alternately fill or leave open the gaps between them. These spontaneous gestures form a visual field where control and release coexist, embodying what the artist calls “the moment of balance.” “For me, everything begins with the heart.” To MY Q, painting is not an act of representation but of resonance. Emotion is both the origin and the pulse of his process, while chance and imperfection are embraced as integral to its rhythm. His canvases capture the tension between collision and fluidity, stillness and movement—translating the pulse of time into visual rhythm.

Art critic Youngtaek Park, Professor at Kyonggi University, writes: “MY Q’s paintings flow like music. Black lines initiate the composition, followed by soft, hazy tones and drifting brushstrokes. The flow feels rhythmic, like the passage of time within emotion. His painting is the transformation of bodily sensation into a record of emotional time.” In Traces in Between, the artist minimizes intention, allowing intuition to guide his hand. The tremor of his brush, the spreading of pigment, even unplanned ruptures are absorbed into the work as evidence of life. The goal is not perfection, but vitality—the residue of feeling that remains visible after the act. The density of his practice is closely tied to his environment. After moving from a closed, underground studio to a more open space, the artist found his gestures growing freer, his breathing longer. This physical transition manifests in the paintings themselves, where openness and expansion emerge as both spatial and emotional conditions. Rhythm is the architecture of his painting. Lines move like melody, colors resonate like harmony, and repeated brushstrokes create the tempo of emotional time.

In this way, MY Q extends painting toward the realm of “visible music,” dissolving the boundaries between the visual and the auditory. Underlying his process is an acute awareness of time—its flow, its individuality, and its rhythm. “Each of us has our own timing,” he says, viewing painting as a means of recognizing that personal tempo. The moment when color and line meet on the canvas becomes, for him, the true space of “in-between.”

Traces in Between continues MY Q’s ongoing exploration of rhythm and emotion, visualizing the unseen spaces where presence and absence overlap. His paintings breathe in that interval—between fullness and void, expression and silence—revealing how art can exist as a rhythm within life itself. Ultimately, MY Q’s painting asks how a personal emotion can resonate outward into a shared experience. The canvas becomes both a stage and a score, where the remnants of feeling unfold as rhythm and color. This exhibition marks the evolution of his artistic language, presenting a landscape where music and painting meet through the pulse of emotion.
